Tarot Reading for March 2016

 AND
Blog #54: A Few Types of Meditation

Legacy of the Divine Tarot

10 OF COINS:  March is shaping up to be a month of abundance, with good things happening.  See the results of your work and efforts start flowing to you as you enjoy the bounty that is on the way.  You may experience abundance not just in finances, but in any area related to the physical world—job/career, health, home, and/or sense of stability and security.  Start out the month by visualizing what you want and do the work that is needed to make it happen.  If you have already put forth the energy, be patient as you see what unfolds.
JUDGEMENT:  This month would be a good time to evaluate where you would like to see yourself in the next several months or a year.  Feel rejuvenated and inspired to do something different that can help propel you forward.  Perhaps you are ready for a change or just want to focus on something new. Take stock of where you are and ask yourself questions such as “Am I happy with my life right now?” “Is there anything I can be doing besides my same routine?” “Am I ready for a change?” “Should I take a risk and see where it leads?”  Remember that there are unlimited possibilities waiting for you if you will just give yourself a chance to explore them.
QUEEN OF SWORDS:  Do your best to stand in your own truth and let your authentic self shine through. Take action based on what your intuition is telling you to do rather than accepting what others want you to do.  Listen to your heart, for it is the source of who you truly are.  Do not give away your power to others by letting them make decisions for you, nor allow them to sway your thinking despite doubts that their way may not be best.  Listen to your own inner self and go with your gut instinct.
9 OF CUPS: Satisfaction and fulfillment can be yours this month, because good things are in the works.  Look forward to positive outcomes that will bring you joy and delight.  As with the 10 of Coins, success is on the horizon, and this is another indication that you are on the right track.  Whatever you have done up to this point has been part of your divine path, so give yourself credit for all the positive actions you have taken.  Sit back for a while and enjoy the abundance that you so richly deserve.  Be grateful for all that you have accomplished and all that you will do in the future.
TRENDS FOR THE MONTH:  What a beautiful month March is shaping up to be!  Both the 10 of Coins and 9 of Cups bode well for you enjoying the results of the work and effort you have expended.  Look for abundance not only in major things such as financial gain or a job upgrade, but in the everyday little things that can bring enjoyment and satisfaction on a smaller but equally important level.  The other two cards, Judgement and Queen of Swords, encourage you to look objectively at yourself and ask honest questions. While in this feeling-good space of things going well, take time to look deeply within to get to the core of your authentic self and recognize the truth of how you want to live your life.  Then you will be able to bask in continued joy and contentment.

Blog #54:  A Few Types of Meditation

When people think of meditation, the most obvious picture that comes to mind is someone sitting on the floor with legs crossed and eyes closed.  Many people, of course, do practice meditation this way, but it is by no means the only way.

First of all, you can meditate in any position you like—sitting on the floor, sitting in a chair, standing, lying down, walking.  Your eyes can be open or closed, or you can focus on an object, such as the flame of a candle.  Even yoga and qigong are considered forms of meditation.  You can meditate alone or in a group.

Some teachers say that meditation is a state of mind related to awareness and acceptance. If this is so, then you can meditate any time in the middle of any activity. (See “mindfulness” meditation below.)

The purpose of this short article is to give a few types of others kinds of meditation that can be practiced.  Perhaps you will find one that works for you, or maybe you have been meditating all along in your own way that felt right to you, but didn’t know that it was “meditation”.

There are many more kinds of meditation than those listed below, but this is a good place to start if you want just a quick summary.

Concentration: This type of meditation is what it implies—you train your mind to focus on an object, your breath, a mantra (a meaningful word or phrase) or nothing at all, so that all distractions are removed.  This lets the mind be calm and still, which has a positive effect on the body by removing stress and tension.  It is recommended that beginners start with the simplest thing to focus on—your breath.

Several types of concentration meditation are: transcendental meditation (TM), om, and chakra.

Open Awareness: The idea here is to open your mind to whatever is happening around you without focusing on anything specifically.  For example, you could focus on the blue sky with clouds floating by, or a river that is moving swiftly in a current, or the stars that you see on a clear night.  The idea is to be present with whatever arises.

Mindfulness:  One author states that this is the most popular and widely researched meditation in the western world.  It is a combination of concentration and open awareness.  In this type of meditation, you focus on an object (breath, bodily sensations, thoughts, feelings, or sounds).  You can extend your focus to daily actions, such as eating, walking, driving, or doing housework.  The key is to pay attention to whatever you are doing, rather than simply acting like a robot and then realizing you did something without being aware of it.

Some examples of mindfulness are:  deep breathing, body scan, visualization, mindful breathing, mindful eating, seated meditation, walking meditation.

Guided meditation:  This may be the best technique for you if you find the idea of focusing on your breath to be boring.  In a guided meditation, you listen to a recording that elicits certain images, affirmations, states (such as calmness) or imagined desired experiences.  Guided imagery has been used to facilitate health and well-being, and is even used to rehearse successful outcomes of surgeries or athletic performances.

Reflective Meditation:  This is also called disciplined thinking, in which you choose a question, theme or topic to focus on.  Then you reflect on it or analyze it.  At first, your mind may wander to other topics, but you keep coming back to the topic in question.  For some people, starting out with the concentration meditation would be helpful before moving on to this type.

Examples of ideas to focus on include: Who am I? What is my life purpose? What is my role in this universe?

Heart-Centered Meditation:  This type of meditation can help you release fears and focus on loving kindness and compassion.  Another name for it is the heart chakra meditation.  In this technique, you would choose a quiet place, select the position that is most comfortable for you, and focus on the heart area.  Inhale and exhale slowly but smoothly. You can also connect with the heart of a person whom you feel is compassionate and loving.  This is also a good technique to use if you want to help change the negative energy that exists in parts of the world today.  Set an intention to spread love, kindness, and compassion to all the people in the world who are suffering.  Buddhist monks focus daily on the cultivation of compassion in their meditations.

For more in-depth information on meditation and how to do it, one good source is Meditation for Dummies by Stephan Bodian.  Of course, there are other good manuals available, as well as numerous articles, so you can go on-line to find resources that might appeal to you.

Blog #53: The Many Benefits of Flaxseed

Legacy of the Divine Tarot

8 OF SWORDS:  You may be feeling somewhat indecisive about an issue or problem that is bothering you, but now is not the time to do simply nothing.  Take a few moments to think through what might be the best course of action, even listing pros and cons of alternatives if that would be helpful.  Remember that to do nothing is making a decision, and the results could very well not be in your favor.  So instead of waffling back and forth, or just postponing what may be a difficult choice, just go ahead and do something.
4 OF WANDS: Things will start looking up this month, especially if you have felt that you were in a murky, unclear place where confusion reigned.  The good news is that you are entering a time of peace and calm, a time of replenishing yourself now that the new year is getting underway.  You will start feeling more stable and secure as you look optimistically towards the future, so use this time to evaluate your goals and see if you are headed in the right direction. Good times can be in your future, so let them happen.
TEMPERANCE: This month can be magical in a wonderful sort of way, allowing the alchemy of change to take place. You can transform a challenge into something that will bring more balance into your life, and you can allow yourself time to do this.  Patience is important right now, so there is no need to rush anything.  Moderation is also helpful, so show self-restraint when necessary. Changing ourselves may take time, but it’s worth it. So look for ways to bring in more harmony by letting two completely different things lead to the creation of something new and different—a synthesis of two elements combining and resulting in a unique way of doing or perceiving to create a better outlook.
7 OF SWORDS:  Some type of deception may be lurking about, so stay on your toes and keep your eyes open to what is going on around you.  This dishonesty or untruthfulness could be coming from others or from yourself.  So ask yourself:  Am I being above board with how I feel? Am I giving myself excuses for not doing something that would benefit me because I just don’t want to, or are scared to?  If others are the problem, be tuned in to your intuition so you can spot this negativity easily, and either confront the person or just move on.  This energy could be the instigator for something new coming into your life.
TRENDS FOR THE MONTH: This could be a month of some ups and downs, but you will have the patience and optimism to deal with whatever happens.  Make a decision about challenges and then move on, rather than vacillating back and forth and not doing anything.  Stay upbeat and hopeful, because good things are on the way.  Practice patience as you make changes, bringing visions and goals into fruition; use caution in dealing with others to detect if anything seems suspicious.  Ask yourself if you are being honest with yourself and if not, find out the source of this feeling and do something about it.
Blog #53:  The Many Benefits of Flaxseed

Retrieved from www.eyedoctorguide.com
History

Flaxseeds (or linseeds) come from flax, which is one of the oldest fiber crops in the world.  Linen and other textiles have been produced from flax for over 3,000 years.  It has been considered not only as a source of food and fabric, but also has been used to make sails for ships, bowstrings, and body armor.

Although flaxseed oil is one of the most commercial uses of flaxseed, the nutritional benefits of flaxseeds are being increasingly recognized.  Research over the past 10 years is showing that flaxseed is extremely healthy for the body.  However, even way back in the eighth century King Charlemagne was so sure of the health benefits of flaxseeds that he passed laws requiring his subjects to eat them.

Why flaxseeds are so good for us

Here is a list of what flaxseeds contain that make them so valuable for our health.

Ø  Lignans—Estrogen-like chemical compounds that help to remove free radicals from the body because of their antioxidant qualities.  Flaxseeds are the main source of lignans in human diets. These antioxidant benefits include anti-aging, hormone balance, cellular health, and anti-viral and antibacterial properties.

Ø  Essential fatty acids—Most of the fatty acids in flaxseeds are alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), one of three omega-3 fatty acids.  When eaten, ALA is converted into other more powerful omega-3s.  The best way to consume flaxseeds for maximum omega-3 benefit is through flaxseed oil.

Ø  Flavonoids—Compounds that lower “bad” cholesterol.

Ø  Fiber (both soluble and insoluble)--Makes up 28% of ground flaxseed and helps with digestion and cholesterol levels.

Ø  Vitamins and minerals—Includes most of the B vitamins, magnesium, manganese, iron, potassium, copper, zinc, phosphorus, and selenium

 Possible health benefits

NOTE:  To get the most benefits from flaxseeds, they should be bought in ground form or ground before eating, because whole flaxseeds may not be digested when passing through the digestive tract.

Although recent research is suggesting that flaxseeds might live up to their beneficial claims, be aware that there needs to be more high quality studies done to confirm these claims.

The possible health benefits included in the literature thus far are:

Ø  Cancer protection—Some studies have shown that consuming flaxseed may protect against prostate, colon, and breast cancers.  These results may be related to the anti-inflammatory qualities that flaxseeds have as well as the omega-3 acids they contain.

Ø  Digestive health—The ALA omega-3 fatty acids help protect the digestive tract lining and improve the intestinal absorption of nutrients, thus maintaining the health of the gastrointestinal tract.  Also, they can help reduce inflammation of some digestive ailments.

Ø  Alleviation of post-menopausal symptoms—Flaxseed may help reduce the risk of hot flashes, thanks to the estrogenic properties of lignans.

Ø  Cardiovascular benefits—The ALA omega-3 fatty acid can help protect blood vessels from damage caused by inflammation and may help regulate blood pressure.  It also may help lower bad cholesterol.

 How to consume flaxseed

There are a variety of ways that flaxseed can easily become a part of your regular diet:

Ø  Sprinkle ground flaxseeds onto hot or cold cereal, cooked vegetables, or soups and salads.

Ø  Add flaxseeds to muffin, cookie, or bread recipes.

Ø  Add ground flaxseeds to breakfast shakes or smoothies.

Ø  Mix one tablespoon of flaxseed into yogurt.

Ø  Add it to tomato sauces or to casseroles.

Some people do experience side effects when eating flaxseed (such as bloating, flatulence, stomach pains, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea), so if you have a sensitive digestive system, talk with your medical professional or do your own research before adding flaxseed to your diet.

There are many reasons to include flaxseed as part of your diet to become healthier, but only you can make the decision that is best for you.

Tarot Reading for January 2016

 AND
Blog #52: Is Fluoride Really Dangerous?

Legacy of the Divine Tarot

ACE OF CUPS:  The start of the new year is a good opportunity to meet new people, especially those who are positive and upbeat. New relationships can come your way if you make an effort to get out, attend events and gatherings, and bring fun and play into your life.  This can also be a time of reigniting the spark of current romantic relationships by getting out of your routine and doing things you have never done before—exciting, inspirational activities such as traveling to new places (which don’t have to be very far away), going to concerts or plays that are uplifting, or just planning ahead to spend more time together.
2 OF SWORDS:  The new year may bring with it some decisions that need to be made about where your life is headed for the next several months.  Be sure to take a balanced approach to any decision-making that is required--use your analytical left brain to fully assess the situation, identifying pros and cons.  Your intuitive right brain will help when you ask yourself how you feel about the issue—what would be best for you, or what would make you happy. This approach will allow you to see any potential pitfalls that may get in the way of clear thinking and making wise choices.
JUSTICE:  See January as an opportunity to introduce more balance and harmony into your life. Perhaps last year you spent too much time working rather than setting aside play time, or maybe you could have worked more efficiently, thus allowing more social time.  If we don’t have fun, we may start to view life as boring, becoming restless and dissatisfied.  Start today by promising yourself that at least once a week you will do something that makes you smile and that brings joy into your heart.  It can be merely going outdoors, seeing a movie, exploring a new place you have never been, or being with friends you haven’t seen in a while.

5 OF WANDS:  Some challenges may arise during the month, but this does not mean that you have to stay in a negative space of worry and anxiety.   It is all about perception, and how you view a difficulty or bump in the road.  If you take a playful approach rather than one of doubt or fear, you will see that the issue may not be as bad as you made it out to be in the first place.  Trust that you will be able to deal with it; ask for help if you need it, and then go ahead and do something to handle it.  You have the ability to do this as long as you don’t wallow in feelings of insecurity or any kind of negative energy.  See the new year giving you the resources you need to tackle any challenge that arises.
TRENDS FOR THE MONTH:  January will be filled with some exciting possibilities that can increase your sense of happiness and gratitude for the entire year.   Seek out new relationships by making a conscious effort to attend gatherings or meetings where you know like-minded people will be.  Put a spark in a romantic relationship by doing something different for a change—get out of old ruts, and you may be amazed at the results.  Bring equilibrium into your life by approaching decisions through a combination of intellect and intuition.  Continue to stay balanced by enjoying more fun times with friends and family rather than feeling guilty for engaging in play time; you deserve some rest and recreation. Re-create what you want this year to be!  See difficulties or challenges as hurdles that you can easily cross, knowing that a positive attitude will go a long way.

Blog #52:  Is Fluoride Really Dangerous?

Retrieved from www.askdrmaxwell.com

Fluoride is the chemical that was been put into drinking water in the 1940’s, and it was introduced into toothpaste in 1955.   Fluorides are compounds containing a mixture of fluorine with another substance, usually a metal (such as sodium fluoride or stannous fluoride).  Once fluorides are ingested, they are absorbed into the blood through the digestive system and collect in areas high in calcium, such as bones and teeth.

The purpose of adding fluoride to drinking water was to prevent tooth decay, but over the years the addition of this chemical into our water has become wrought with controversy.

Some points to be aware of:

Ø  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has never approved fluoride for use in water. In fact, research has shown that fluoridated water is not even necessary, since we already get over 300% of the American Dental Association’s recommended amount from other sources (such as food, toothpaste, mouth rinses, beverages other than water); many foods and beverages are processed using fluoridated water.

Ø  The chemicals used for fluoridation are not pure products but instead are byproducts of aluminum and fertilizer manufacturing.  As a result, they are toxic and have high amounts of heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, and chromium.

Ø  In 1993, the National Research Council acknowledged that city municipal drinking water supplies may result in dental fluorosis in about 10% of the population.  Dental fluoridation is a condition characterized by the mottling (staining) or corrosion (pitting) of teeth.  It happens mostly in infancy and early childhood, and occurs in high levels of fluoridation. Dental cavities may be prevented with lower levels of fluoride.  That is why it is extremely important to know the level of fluoridation in your drinking water.

Ø  Bottle-fed babies receive the highest amounts of fluoride when their formula is mixed with fluoridated water.

Ø  Fluoride accumulates in the body.  Healthy kidneys will excrete 50-60% of fluoride ingested, and whatever is left is stored in the bones and pineal gland. (See Blog #11 for an article on the effects of fluoride on the pineal gland.)

Ø  Some research has also shown that fluoride may be associated with brain damage, lowered IQ, early puberty, reproductive problems, thyroid function, arthritis, hip fractures in the elderly, kidney disease, and even cancer. Although there is no conclusive evidence showing that fluoride plays a role in these diseases, you should use your own discretion when drinking fluoridated water.

Ø  The U.S. is certainly in the minority of countries that fluoridate its water. Only ten other countries have the majority of their populations drinking fluoridated water—including Australia, Chile, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Brunei.  It does make one wonder why this might be so.

Ø  If you are drinking bottled water, be sure to check what the fluoride level is. The U.S. Public Health Service says that a moderate amount between 0.7 and 1.2 milligrams per liter of water is all that is necessary to prevent tooth decay.  The EPA recommends a maximum of 2.0 milligrams per liter to protect children from dental fluorosis.  The maximum amount allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is 4.0 milligrams per liter.  Anything above these amounts could lead to problems.

So if fluoride can be such a problem, why is it still put in municipal drinking water?  At least two reasons have been proposed:

Ø  Dentists have been saying for so long (since the 1960’s) that fluoride is essential for good dental health that they for the most part are totally in favor of continuing to promote fluoridated toothpaste and water.  Old habits die hard, and some of them are not even open to the possibility that fluoride may be a problem.

Ø  Fluoride is a toxic by-product in the manufacture of manmade chemicals, and to dispose of it may be costly.  So lobbyists for these industries continue to present “scientific” studies showing the value of putting fluoride in water.  In short, there is much profit for these companies in down-playing the dangers of fluoride.

So what is the answer? If you want to be on the safe side, the best course of action is to reduce the amount of fluoride you ingest.  You can do this by drinking filtered or purified water.  If you drink bottled water, make sure that the amount of fluoride lies in the safe zone discussed above.  Other tips include:

Ø  Avoid processed and packaged food.

Ø  Buy fluoride-free toothpaste.

Ø  Avoid fluoride dental treatments.

Ø  Filter tap water.

Ø  Don’t drink sodas, coffee, or iced tea at restaurants.

Ø  Don’t drink bottled water (unless it’s European water).

Ø  Order European mineral water in restaurants.

Ø  Drink wine and beer imported from Europe.

There is a lot of information on the internet that can be further researched to help you make a sound decision.

Tarot Reading for December 2015
 AND
Blog #51: What Is Shamanic Healing?

Legacy of the Divine Tarot

STRENGTH:  Let your inner courage shine this month by stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something different or a little challenging.  It could be going somewhere you have never been before, doing something on your own by yourself (especially when you feel more comfortable when with someone else), or taking a class that may require you to stretch and really think.  Whatever it might be, consider taking a risk and see where it leads.
7 OF COINS:  With the new year approaching, now is a good time to just start thinking about what you would like the year to be for you. It is not necessary to set formal goals or get really serious now, but just start thinking of one or two things you would like to accomplish. Perhaps you set goals last year that you did not achieve, or you find yourself going in a new direction and realize brand-new activities are called for.  Some of your future goals may take time and patience, so get ready to make a difference in your life by thinking of them now and preparing to act on them later.
8 OF SWORDS: If you have been feeling trapped or indecisive, tell yourself that you are no longer going to put up with this. Ask for help to get out of whatever bind you find yourself in, if that is what your intuition is telling you.  Asking for help is different from expecting to be rescued, so remember that you have all that you need within. It is just a matter of tapping into your own resources and having belief in yourself.  Stop doubting yourself and your ability to make things happen.  Our negative thoughts can hold us back if we let them take hold, and it then becomes more difficult to get out of the self-imposed prison. Now is the time for action.
6 OF WANDS: You will find success this month, so stay in a positive frame of mind and wait for your achievements to bear fruit. If you have worked hard and done your best, then know that your efforts will be paying off. Look for any kind of success—large or small—during the month, and give yourself a pat on the back for any progress that you have made. You are on the right track so keep going. Let the year end with joyous thanks for all that you have accomplished, and remember that you deserve to be proud of yourself for any hurdles you have succeeded in mastering.
MONTHLY TRENDS: This month will be promising in many ways, so start feeling the energy of becoming stronger and more courageous. You are stepping into your own power in many ways, and you are on the threshold of numerous wonderful things that may be taking shape in the new year. You will find ways to clear away doubt, confusion, or indecision by being willing to take risks, and you may even scare and amaze yourself by doing something you thought you would never have the courage to do.  There is a great possibility that you will be successful in these endeavors, so start the month by knowing that the rewards you so rightly deserve are right around the corner.
Blog #51:  What Is Shamanic Healing?

                                               Retrieved from www.vivapartnership.com

Shamanism, which is the basis for shamanic healing, is an ancient form of spiritual, energetic, and holistic healing which goes back 30,000-40,000 years.  It is a spiritual practice (not a religion) consisting of activities and experiences shared by shamans from all parts of the world.  The shaman journeys into the spiritual world to retrieve information that will be helpful in the healing process.

The term shaman refers to “a healer who moves into an altered state of consciousness to access a hidden reality in the spirit world for purposes of bringing back healing, power, and information.” (http://www.sacredshamanichealing.com/10-Shamanism.html).  The root of the word is Siberian and means “one who sees in the dark”; it  includes healers in various cultures called a variety of names, such as medicine women/men, healers, or seers.

Shamans believe that spiritual imbalance in the physical, emotional, spiritual, and/or mental bodies is the cause of problems.  Therefore, a key component to the shamanic healing process involves the shaman restoring balance and wholeness to the patient by identifying and addressing the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

Another important aspect of this healing is that the shaman works with spiritual guides who provide information about what is needed to restore the patient to health.  One shaman expresses his work like this: “. . . I tell clients this is not my work, but rather Spirit working through me.  My goal is always to be a clear and open channel for God’s healing, wisdom, and love to flow through me for the healing of the client.” (http://www.sacredshamanichealing.com/10-Shamanism.html).

Just as in ancient times, people in our society seek out the help of shamans for solutions to a wide array of problems, such as illness, challenges related to work or home life, or even resolving issues that may have an ancestral root cause.  Shamans may be consulted after a person is not seeing satisfactory results from conventional medical approaches.

How does a shaman work?

Shamans must first get permission from the client before starting the healing process and do not guarantee the outcome, because it is the spirits healing the person, not the shamans by themselves.

They work in the spiritual realm, recognizing that the physical reality is not the only one that exists—there are other invisible realms to which shamans travel to get information.

Shamans “journey” into this spiritual world by going into a meditative state accompanied by the sounds of drumming or shaking rattles.  They then ask for the help of spirits in these other realities to heal clients by restoring the wholeness of the client’s spiritual energy.  They see physical illness as a “disruption of spiritual energy” and help heal various types of spiritual illness (such as loss of a part of the soul due to trauma or addiction; this healing is called soul retrieval).

Shamans typically start the session by asking their healing spirits what the person needs, and then do what they are directed to do.  One shaman says, “I’m not doing the healing; I’m the connection.”  (http://www.prevention.com/mind-body/emotional-health/how-shamanic-healing-works)

There is more to health and healing than just dealing with the physical body.  As one author so aptly puts it: “Our modern medical practices focus on the physical, our culture is obsessed with the mental, and psychotherapy addresses the emotional, but the fourth of these aspects, the spiritual, is mostly ignored if not invalidated all together.” (http://www.findyourpathhome.com/ps_main.html)

One shaman explains the process clearly:

“My job, as a shamanic practitioner, is to go into non-ordinary reality by means of the journey trance.  What is that? Simply put, a journey trance is a form of meditation using repetitive sound (drumming or rattling) to help the practitioner enter an altered state of consciousness whereby he or she can access the unconscious of another.  . . . This access allows us to find where the person had disconnected from himself or his power and by drawing attention and understanding to it enables him to reconnect.” (http://www.findyourpathhome.com/ps_main.html)

Here is how another shaman describes his work:

“. . . the shaman enters a shamanic state of consciousness through listening to rhythmic percussion. He or she then journeys to the world of spirits and connects with spirit allies for healing work.  These spirits are available to help everyone, and the shaman’s role is often to reconnnect clients with their helping spirits, restoring their personal power.” (http://www.spirithealer.com/about/shamanism/)

The second part of the healing process includes instructions for further healing.  For example, the shaman may tell the client to use certain herbal essences, make changes to his/her diet, or seek out massage therapy, aromatherapy, or energy healing such as reiki.

If you feel that shamanic healing may be helpful for you and would possibly be a different route for you to try in your healing process, get referrals or seek out information on shamans in your area.
